私の家は、シドニーの中心部から、ハーバーブリッジを越えて車で五、六分の所にある。 シドニーの中心部まで車で十分弱である。 こんなに都心に近いのに私の家の周りには結構野生動物がいる。 最近私の家の家族が迷惑をしているのが、ポッサムという動物である。 ポッサムは、小型の猫くらいの大きさで、オーストラリア独特の有袋類で、夜行性の動物である。 有袋類というのは実に不思議な動物で、カンガルーにその特徴が顕著だが、赤ん坊は極めて小さく産んで、それを自分の腹の前の袋に入れて育てる。乳首は腹の袋の中についている。 カンガルーの赤ん坊は生まれたとき、人間の人差し指ほどの大きさしかない。生まれるとすぐに自分で母親の腹によじ登り袋の中に収まる。そのままかなり大きくなるまで母親の腹の袋の中で過ごす。 そのカンガルーの生殖の面白い話を娘に教えて貰った。 カンガルーは、子供を生むと交尾する。卵は受精する。 しかし、腹
