標題の趣旨の質問が寄せられたので,この問題について歴史的な観点から考えてみたい.現代英語の動詞には,過去の出来事を表わすのに典型的に用いられる過去形がある.同様に,現在(あるいは普遍)の習慣的出来事を表わすには,動詞は典型的に現在形で活用する.しかし,未来の出来事に関しては,動詞を未来形として屈折させるような方法は存在しない.代わりに will, shall, be going to などの(準)助動詞を用いるという統語的な方法がとられている.つまり,現代英語には統語的な未来形はあるにせよ,形態的な未来形はないといってよい.単に「未来形」という用語では,統語,形態のいずれのレベルにおける「形」かについて誤解を招く可能性があることから,現代英語の文法書ではこの用語が避けられる傾向があるのではないか.
