長谷川海太郎という昭和初期に活躍した流行作家がいます。彼は3つのペンネームを使い、さまざまなジャンルの小説を書き分けました。読んでみると、全く別の3人の作家がいるとしか思えないほど、文体は異なります。ところが、読点のつけ方（どの文字の後にどの程度付けられているか）に着目してデータを分析すると、3人（実は長谷川海太郎1人）の文章は、他の作家とは明らかに違う、長谷川海太郎ならではの特徴を示していることがわかりました。このように、文章の数量的な分析（計量分析）から著者を割り出したり、作品成立の謎を解き明かしたりする学問を計量文献学と言います。 文章の計量分析では、データをどのように作るか、そしてどこに着目して分析を行なうかが非常に重要です。出現頻度の多い安定した情報で、なおかつ無意識にクセが出やすい「読点のつけ方」を分析対象にしたところがポイントなのです。しかし、読点のない古典では、この手法は使
