米コロンビア大学のクラウス・ラックナー教授とハイテク研究開発会社Global Research Technologies（GRT）は4月24日、大気中から二酸化炭素を吸収する「air extraction」のプロトタイプを開発、実験に成功したと発表した。 同教授とGRTは2004年に開発を開始。大気中から二酸化炭素分子を吸収し、固定化することができるため、発電所などに直接配備する必要がなく、世界中のどこに配置しても効果が期待できるとしている。 開口部が1平方メートルの機器で、大気中から年間約10トンの二酸化炭素を吸収できるという。つまり100平方メートルの開口部を持つ機器を製造すれば、年間1000トンの吸収が可能になる。英国家財政委員会の気候変化に関する調査によると、世界の二酸化炭素濃度を産業革命期以前の2倍程度にとどめるには、2025年までに110億トンの二酸化炭素を削減する必要があると
