Why was the Soviet Union created? Posted by Branko Milanovic on Wednesday, August 21,
National self-determination, the principle that US President Woodrow Wilson put on the international agenda in 1918, is generally defined as the right of a people to form its own state. The independence referendums in Iraqi Kurdistan and Catalonia are the latest examples showing why that principle is so often difficult to apply. CAMBRIDGE – This week, Kurds in northern Iraq voted overwhelmingly in
The libertarians were different. They slipped more easily into the American stream. In their insistence on freedom they could claim to be descendants of Locke, Jefferson, and the classical liberal tradition. Some of them interpreted the Constitution as a libertarian document for individual and states’ rights under a limited federal government, not as a framework for the strengthened nation that th
(The Assassin’s Gate: America in Iraq)』(2005年)や『綻びゆくアメリカ(The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America)』(2013年)を著したジョージ・パッカーが近著『最後にして最善の希望(Last Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal)』(2021年)において描くアメリカは、交差することのない4つのアメリカの姿だ。
Beijing Ransacked Data as U.S. Intelligence Sources Went Dark in Xi Jinping's China https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/12/22/china-us-data-in
Exclusive: Suspected Chinese spy targeted California politicians A suspected Chinese intelligence operative developed extensive ties with local and national politicians, including a U.S. congressman, in what U.S. officials believe was a political intelligence operation run by China’s main civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015, Axios found in a yearlong investigation. Why it matters: The allege
Kathleen Hall Jamieson, of Penn, has done a forensic examination of the campaign.Illustration by Tyler Comrie Donald Trump has adopted many contradictory positions since taking office, but he has been unwavering on one point: that Russia played no role in putting him in the Oval Office. Trump dismisses the idea that Russian interference affected the outcome of the 2016 election, calling it a “made
Indonesian Muslims at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on May 26. Saudi Arabia has been working to pull Indonesia away from moderate Islam. Just a few months ago, the governor of Indonesia’s largest city, Jakarta, seemed headed for easy re-election despite the fact that he is a Christian in a mostly Muslim country. Suddenly everything went violently wrong. Using the pretext of an offhand remark the gove
It was a breezy, surprisingly pleasant summer week in Washington as the frenzy around potential Trump-Russia revelations reached near-carnival levels. On Thursday, brightly clad groups scattered across the lawns of Capitol Hill could almost have been picnickers — if not for the mounds of cable leashing them to nearby satellite trucks. Every news studio in D.C. seemed to have spilled forth into the
For the first time in 70 years, the American people have elected a president who disparages the policies, ideas, and institutions at the heart of postwar U.S. foreign policy. No one knows how the foreign policy of the Trump administration will take shape, or how the new president’s priorities and preferences will shift as he encounters the torrent of events and crises ahead. But not since Franklin
