大赤飯曰く、"Space.comの記事によると、NASAはハッブル望遠鏡等により、木星に新たな赤斑「Red Jr.」（正式名称は「Oval BA」）が形成されつつあるのを観測した(NASAのプレスリリース)。Oval BAは2000年に3つの渦が合体して形成された渦で、当初は白い色（白斑）を示していた。しかし、2005年12月頃から茶色に変色し始め、数週間前から赤色を示すようになり「今では大赤斑と同じ色になった」という。 木星で最も目を引く特徴である大赤斑（Wikipediaの解説)は、1665年頃カッシーニあるいはロバート・フックによって発見されて以降、300年以上にわたり安定に存在してきた地球の2～3倍程度の大きさをもつ渦で、典型的な孤立波(Solitary wave, Solition)として解釈されることもあるものの、その成因や維持のメカニズム、また何故赤い色をしているのかなど謎に
