白亜紀からの挑戦状 筆者も小さい頃は、御多分にもれず怪獣映画やウルトラシリーズ大好き少年であった。特撮番組の魅力は、何といっても怪獣の造形である。みんな、かっこよくてインパクトのある怪獣や宇宙人に魅力を感じるのだ。怪獣に魅力が無いと、視聴率に敏感に影響するから、制作サイドは大変である。怪獣として魅力的であるには「普通の生き物とはできるだけ異なる造形」を持っていなければならない。しかし、その一方で、「生物としてのリアリティ」を保持しないと、観ている方はしらけてしまう。そのあたりのバランスが、なかなか難しいし、製作者には芸術家としての才能が必要とされる。だから、初期のウルトラシリーズの怪獣デザインは、彫刻家の成田享がやっていたりする。 怪獣ブームの初期、つまり視聴者が、まだ怪獣に慣れていないときは、生物としてのリアリティの方に比重がかかる。だから初期の怪獣は、動物が大きくなったものか、恐竜
