まず言葉の定義をはっきりさせましょう。ネットブックとは、昨年春に米インテル社が提唱したカテゴリです。インテルによれば、これはノートブックとMID(Mobile Internet Device)/UMPC(Ultra-Mobile PC)の中間に位置するもので、8〜10インチ画面の、インターネットに特化した機械となっています。重要なのは、インテルはこれをノートブックとは違うものであると主張していることです。インテルの狙いは、数年前レベルのCPUを値下げして新たな分野を開拓し、新たなユーザー層を獲得することでした。 しかし現実にネットブックと呼ばれているものは、ほとんどそのように使われていません。象徴的なのがOSですね。インターネットに特化するならLinuxでも良いはずです。ブラウザはFirefox、メールはThunderbirdという立派なソフトがあります(ちなみに私はWindowsでもこの
