根津美術館
尾形光琳（1658～1716）の筆になる国宝「燕子花図屏風」は、絵とデザインの境界線上に位置する作品です。群青を分厚く塗った花や、緑青を勢いよく刷いた葉など、画家の絵筆の介在は明らかですが、平面上の幾何学的なレイアウトが作品の核心であるのも間違いありません。 「燕子花図屏風」の示すデザイン性、あるいは装飾性は、日本の美術が古来、内包してきたものです。日本における工芸品の意匠と絵画の親密な関係も特筆されます。一方、「燕子花図屏風」は草花図でありながら和歌や物語とも関わると考えられていますが、それは、デザインによって文学世界を象徴的に表しているとも言えます。 本展では、「燕子花図屏風」を中心にすえ、近世の作品を主にとりあげながら、デザインの観点から日本の美術をみつめます。
