今月、埼玉県鴻巣市内で開かれた外国人学校の協議会。同市のブラジル人学校「セントロ・エドカシオナル・カナリーニョ(CEC)」の吉村ジュリエッタ校長(50)が悲鳴のような声を上げた。 CECでは二歳から高校生まで約百三十人が学んでいたが、今は約八十人。年末にかけてさらに二十人が辞める。教員を減らし、限界まで経費を切り詰めても、学校は存亡の危機だ。吉村校長一家は少しでも学校の運営費用に回そうと、自宅を引き払って学校の最上階の教室に住むことになった。 自動車産業の不況を背景に、外国人の派遣労働者が真っ先に解雇され始めた。CECの月謝は五万五千円。高いのは公的助成金が出ないからだ。ブラジル人学校はどこも同じ状況。親の給料が減ったり、失業したりして、子どもが学校に通えなくなり、各地で廃校が相次いでいる。
