井浦新のアメリカ映画デビューとなる『Tokyo Cowboy(原題)』は、彼が演じる主人公のヒデキがモンタナ州の牧場で、タイトルどおり“東京から来たカウボーイ”になる感動のドラマ。日本の企業で働くヒデキが、出張でモンタナの牧場へ向かい、和牛の飼育を勧めるはずが、現地の人々との交流によって自身の生き方を見つめ直す。最初は白い目で見られるアウトサイダーの主人公が、価値観の違う世界に馴染み、受け入れられる過程は、ある意味、映画の王道と言える。 (井浦新のキャスティングや日本でのロケの話などは前回の記事を参照) ただ、このように日本人を描いたアメリカ映画では、往々にして“勘違い”な描写や違和感満点のセリフが盛り込まれることを、われわれは何度も目にしてきた。しかし『Tokyo Cowboy』では、そうした点が限りなく少ない。その大きな理由は、日本を深く理解する人が脚本に関わっているからだ。その名は、
