ヨハネスブルク駐在の特派員時代、筆者の悩みはアフリカに関する記事を書いて日本の本社に送っても、それがなかなか掲載されないことであった。この現実は、誰が特派員になっても簡単には変わらないだろう。アフリカに対する日本人の関心の相対的な低さを思えばやむを得ないと分かってはいるものの、現場の記者にとっては残念なことである。 だが、悪いことばかりではなかった。アフリカ駐在特派員は本社から半ば忘れられた存在なので、本社の意向を忖度(そんたく)して原稿を執筆する必要がないのである。ましてや、ある特定のニュースについて東京から執筆命令が来ることは、まずない。「日本向け」の記事を執筆するよう有形無形の圧力を受けることがないので、アフリカではほとんど問題視されていないような事実を「日本向け」に敢えて大騒ぎし、針小棒大な原稿を書く必要もない。 現場の記者は、目の前で起きていることを、自らの知見と感性に基づいて忠
