普通の英語とビジネス英語とはどこがどのように違うのか。これが今回のテーマです。 ビジネス英語は学校などで教える「普通の」英語と比べて、あきらかに違う、大きなニーズがあります。それなのに、「ビジネス英語とは何か」ということになると、たいていは、教える方も教わる方も各人が自分なりのイメージを抱いている程度です。だからこそ会社勤めの人を集めて英語を教えているだけなのにビジネス英語のコースと銘打ったり、あるいは、実務経験のない人が堂々とビジネス英語の本を書くといったことが行われているわけです。もっと悲しいのは、大企業での英語研修もたいていは実施する方も格別ビジネス英語に対してこれという見識がないことを反映して、講師が勝手なことをやっており、結果として費用の割に実りがないことです。 それでは、その「ビジネス英語っていったい何?」ということになるかと思いますが、私自身は、第1に単語での違い、第2に文法

オンライン版 The Wall Street Journal の記事を読んでいて、「あれっ」と思いました。so that で始まっている、目的を表す副詞節の前にカンマが入っていたからです。記事の見出しは In Clubby Japan, A Brash Raider Takes a Big Fall(閉鎖的日本社会に風穴を空けた乗っ取り屋が一気に転落)というもので、ホリエモンを取りあげているのですが、その中に、今回の一件を、多くの日本人は、より深く進んでいる腐敗の一端というよりは、たまたま起きたものと見ているという趣旨の記述に続けて、こうあったのです。 The immediate consequence is likely to be efforts to beef up Japan's corporate and stock-market regulators, so that they
英会話で人に違和感を与えるものの一つに、一つの話を始めて、それを受け継ぐときに出てくる、it, this, thatの使い間違いがあります。使い間違いと言うと言い過ぎかも知れませんが、そこでの流れから考えて、座りの悪いものがあるわけで、相手におやっと思わせ、その意味で本来すっと流れるべきコミュニケーションが損なわれてしまいます。 この it, this, that は、いずれも自分が今しがた発言したことを受けて、次の話をするときに使いますが、基本は it であり、何か格別強調する理由があるときにthisまたはthatを使いますから、場違いなthisやthatが入ると、聞いている方は何か落ち着かない気持ちになってしまうものです。そこで、きょうは、これの基本的な使いわけをご説明いたします。 ★ 辞典の説明 英英辞典、例えば、手元にある Macmillan English Dictionary
昔、英語関係の定期刊行物にビジネス英語の記事を連載させていただいたことがあるのですが、今回は、そのときのボツ原稿をご紹介します。この原稿、別段、問題と感じることもなく、締め切りが近づいたところで出したら、編集長のT氏がこわがってしまったのです。たしかにこれはひどいですね、と言いながらも、まずは当事者で話あってからなどと訳のわからないことを言うので、何だかそこで頑張るのも面倒だし、早々に引っ込めてしまった次第。 どんなすごい内容だろうと思われるでしょうが、ビジネス英語本のバカバカしい誤訳を指摘しただけという他愛ないものです。本は早々に捨ててしまったので、今となっては書名もわかりません。ただ、聞いたことのない外国人が書いた本でしたし、レベルも低いから、もう絶版になっているものと思われます。 それでは、これが「却下された」原稿の中身です …… 先日、「これだけは知っておきたい」というコピーに釣
「相殺って何て言うんですか」とか「こちらが持っている500万円の債権で、御社に対して支払う100万円の債務を相殺する、あるいは相殺権を行使する」と言いたい場合、英語ではどう言うのかと聞かれることがありますので、きょうは、相殺の英語での言い方を取りあげます。英語での相殺は、一般に名詞が set off で、動詞だと to set off ですが、他に、offset が名詞として、また、動詞として使われます。 相殺がどういうものであるかを確認しておきますと、有斐閣の法律学小事典によると、「2人の者が互いに相手に対して同種の債権を持っている場合に、一方から相手方に対する意思表示によってその債務を対当額で消滅させること」です。我が国の場合、民法第505条にその定めが置かれています。 A Handbook of Business Law Terms (West Group)で set offを見ると
株式交換という言葉、最近、経済ニュースでよく出てきます。新しいところでは、先日、セブン・イレブン・ヨーカ堂グループが西武・そごうグループを傘下に収めるに当たり、西武・そごうグループの持株会社(要するに親会社)の株式を65.5%持っている野村系の金融会社から買取り、残りは現金と株式交換で買取ると報じられています。古いところでは(と言っても、二、三年前の話ですが)、ソニーによるアイワの子会社化、松下電器による松下寿電子といった系列上場企業の子会社化がいずれも株式交換によっており、その結果、いずれも飲み込まれた方は上場廃止となりました。外国でも昨年だったと思いますが、フランス政府によるKLM救済劇でも、KLMの株主たちがエールフランス主導の持株会社の株式と自分たちの株式とを交換しています。 ところでネットで「株式交換とは」というキーフレーズを使って検索すると、自社株式と引き換えに買収先企業の株主
