NTTコミュニケーションズと欧州のレジストリ管理団体Reseaux IP Europeens Network Coordination Centre（RIPE NCC）は4月19日、ルートサーバ「K」を東京に共同設置し、運用を始めた。 RIPE NCCは同サーバを欧州を中心として世界で分散運用を進めており、東京での運用はその一環。昨年10月には、NTTコムが協力し、Internet Systems Consortium（ISC）が運用するルートサーバ「F」が大阪で運用を始めている。 ルートサーバは、ドメイン名とIPアドレスを対応させるDNSの最上位に位置するインターネットの根幹。WIDEプロジェクトによる東京の1台を含む合計13台が稼働していたが、2002年10月の一斉DOS攻撃以来、IPエニキャスト技術による分散化が進んでいる。
