タイラー・コーエンがDavide Cantoniというハーバード大の研究者の面白い論文を紹介している。以下はその論文の抄録の拙訳。 マックス・ウェーバーの「プロ倫」を筆頭とした多くの理論が、プロテスタンティズムは経済発展に有利、という仮説を唱えてきた。神聖ローマ帝国のドイツ地域は、19世紀に至るまでのプロテスタンティズムの顕著な宗教的異質多様性と宗派の所属者の安定性から、この仮説の理想的な実証分析の対象となる。1300-1900年の276都市の人口統計データを用いて分析を行なったところ、プロテスタンティズムは経済成長に何ら影響を及ぼさないという結果を得た。様々な制御変数の追加に対してもこの結果は頑健であり、データ選択や小さなサンプルサイズに拠るものでもないと思われる。また、経済発展に寄与すると思われる他の要素とプロテスタンティズムとの交差項も、何の影響も及ぼさない。さらに、宗教の選択の内生
