本家記事より。Nature誌が購読者に対して行った調査で、科学者による集中力向上などのパフォーマンス向上を目的とした薬物使用が明らかになったそうです（WebMD記事）。60か国からの科学者1,400人が対象（うち70%が米国の科学者）となったこの調査では、20%の人が能力向上を目的とした薬物使用を認めたそうです。5人に1人とは高い使用比率で驚きです。 薬物を使用した科学者のうち、62%が中枢神経刺激薬のリタリン、44%が「覚醒促進剤」といわれるProvigil（日本での呼び名はモダフィニル）、15%がインデラルなどの交感神経β受容体遮断薬を使用したことがあるということで、2種類以上使用したことのある人が多いことが伺えます。使用頻度は毎日・毎週・毎月・年1回程度という4パターンに均等に分布していたとのこと。また、調査対象の2/3近くの人は同目的で薬物を使用している同僚を知っていると答えたそう

ＡＤＨＤ治療薬剤による突然死の増加／米国医療事情 リタリン
2004/10/21 テキサスのマッカレンに住む、14才のマシューは約１ヶ月前にＡＤＨＤと診断され、米国の約250万人の他の子どものように、薬Adderall XR錠を飲み始めた。その朝薬を飲んだ後、浴室の床に横たわっているのを見つけた。 今朝発表された研究では、興奮剤の使用が子供と10代の突然の説明されていない死のリスク増加に関連するという。 564人の小児の突然死の研究で、興奮性の薬剤服用で7.4倍も突然死が多かったと、ニューヨーク州精神医学研究所とコロンビア大学のMadelyn Gouldらによって明らかにされた。 ＡＤＨＤ治療薬に対する懸念は以前にもあった。1995/01-2005/02の間でリタリンなどのＡＤＨＤの薬剤成分メチルフェニデートを服用する小児でＦＤＡの副作用報告では11人の突然死が明らかになっている。この数は少ないように見えるが未報告の例がもっとあるのではないかという
