日本は世界でも突出した「CT(コンピュータ断層撮影)大国」だ。医療分野におけるCTの保有台数はここ数年、一万数千台を維持し、経済協力開発機構(OECD)の2009年調査によれば、人口百万人当たりの台数は92.6台で、二位のオーストラリア56.0台、三位米国の34.3台を凌駕する。広大な国土を持つ後者二カ国を考えれば、一層その異常さが際立つ。 そして、国民一人当たりの検査件数も世界一だ。これは、CTによる「放射線被曝大国」でもあることを意味している。CTの乱用・乱診により無用な医療費の増大を招くばかりか、健康への悪影響も危惧される「本末転倒」な事態が放置されている。 ◆横行する安易な使用 CTによる被曝が些細なものと考えるのは早計だ。昨年9月、米国で59歳の女性が、CT検査を受けて間もなく重い急性放射線障害を発症した。これをきっかけに全米で他にも378件ものCT過剰被曝事故が露呈した。
