2009年6月2日(火)~4日(木)の3日間、米国カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスのLos Angeles Convention CenterにてElectronic Entertainment Expo(以下、E3)が行われた。公式発表では4万1000人を超える参加者があり、昨年の5000人規模のものと比べると「昔に戻った」と言えよう。ただし、業界が不振なためか、新型インフルエンザのためか、日本からの参加者は少なめだったと言っていいだろう。業界内外からも評価が高かったため、さっそく来年の会場のブッキングも完了した模様(2010年6月15日~17日)である。 アナリストの反応を見ても、概ね盛況だったE3だが、名物だったSCEA主催のソニーパーティやMSもパーティを行わず、ファーストパーティとして夜の大きな催しをしたのは絶好調の任天堂だけであった。 E3はSouth、WestのExpo会場での大

●ゲーム機の重荷となっている互換性問題 MicrosoftがゲームコンソールのOSをネットワーク配信型にする大きな理由は、ゲームコンソールが直面する互換性問題にあると見られる。間中氏が「システム側の変更が随時行なえる、これは我々の都合が一部ある」と触れているのが、このポイントだ。 前世代までのゲーム機(PlayStation 2やXbox 1など)は、ハード側にはローダー程度のソフトウェアしか持っていなかった。OSやライブラリやドライバのほとんどはゲームディスク側に搭載する、DOS時代のPCと似たようなソフトウェア環境だった。 そのため、ゲームプログラムとOS/ライブラリとの間の互換性は、ディスク上だけで確保すればよかった。ゲームディスクに収録されたバージョンのOSと、ゲームソフトウェアの互換性が保証されていれば実行上問題はなかった。ゲーム機ベンダーは、ハードウェアの一貫性を保ち、ハードが
