川畑▲ 描き文字の歴史を考えるとき、どこからはじめるのかが問題になります。江戸まで遡るか、もっと遡るのか……という話が当然でてくるんですけど、先ほどの「書く／描く」の問題――書との異なり――を前提に考えると、明治期のそれは書き文字ですから、ここではそれ以上遡らないことにします。ただ、ここでは明治の書き文字事情を確認する意味で、一世を風靡した書風―寳丹（ほうたん）と石たい流の二例を紹介しておきます［★図1・2］。 まず寳丹とは、明治４年に官許第1号公認薬となった「守田寳丹」（1862年発売、現・守田治兵衛商店）からきたものなんですが、それを売り出した９代目守田治兵衛（1841～1912）がなかなか時代を先取りした人で、広告宣伝にすごく力を入れた人なんです。その９代目が書いた「寳丹」の書が広告に使われたんですが、ユーモラスで、味があって評判になったんです。 もうひとつの石たい流というのは、書家
芹沢銈介の文字絵・讃／杉浦康平: DESIGN IT! w/LOVE
芹沢銈介さんは、日本民藝運動にも参加した染色作家で、型絵染（布の代わりに紙を型紙で染めたもの）の人間国宝にもなっている人です。その芹沢さんの作品には文字を主題にした作品も多い。 例えば、下は「山」という文字を主題にした2つののれん作品。 藍色ののれんに染めだされた山文字には木が生え、雲がたなびいています。 雲は雨を降らし、木々などの植物を育てます。それが山という文字を主題とした絵のなかに端的に表現されている。 こうした芹沢さんの文字絵作品の魅力を語ってくれるのは、20年以上にわたりアジアの人びとが生み出した造形美に着目し、さまざまな形（例えば、前に紹介した『宇宙を叩く―火焔太鼓・曼荼羅・アジアの響き』など）で紹介してくれている杉浦康平さん。 杉浦さんには、昨年末に出版された『文字の美・文字の力』という本もありますが、本書 『芹沢銈介の文字絵・讃』でも芹沢銈介さんののれんや屏風、ときには着物

1.平仮名の歴史 平仮名の起源は中国由来の漢字を用いて日本語の音節を表したことに始まります。 奈良時代の古事記や万葉集では「くに」を「久爾」と書くように、日本語の音を漢字で表すことが行われました。また、この時代の平仮名は万葉集でたくさん使われていることから「万葉仮名」と呼ばれています。 万葉仮名は該当する漢字の楷書や行書で書かれていましたが、平安時代になると草書で書かれるようになり字体の上から漢字から分化し平仮名となりました。 なお、平仮名の語源は文字を借りると言う意味の「かりな（仮名）」にあるとされています。対して漢字のことは「真名（まな）」と呼ばれていました。 2.変体仮名 もともと平仮名には日本語一音に対して多くの字体がありました。例えば「あ」の音を表すのに「安」「阿」「悪」「愛」を字母（字源となる漢字）とするくずし字が使われていたことが知られています。さらに同じ字母からも数種のくず
