デル、15.6型で“世界最薄クラス”をうたうノートPC――「Dell XPS 15z」:今度はMacBook Pro対抗か デルは5月24日、15.6型ワイド液晶ディスプレイ搭載ノートPC「Dell XPS 15z」を発表、同日より販売を開始した。価格は9万9980円から。 Dell XPS 15zは、同社がFacebookで予告映像を公開していた“薄型ノートPC”だ。かつてデルはアルミ削り出しの薄型ノートPC「Adamo」を投入したことがあるが、今回は光学ドライブを内蔵したWindows搭載の15.6型ノートPCとして世界最薄クラスを実現している。 丸みを帯びたアルミボディの外装はアルマイト加工が施されており、アイソレーションタイプのバックライト付きキーボードや、その脇にあるメッシュ状のスピーカーなど、MacBook Proを思わせるデザインだ。ただし、完全一体成形のユニボディではなく、
Intelは、同社製品の信頼性に自信があるとして、同社SSD「320」シリーズの保証期間を2年間延長した。 同社は米国時間5月20日、同製品の保証期間を3年間から5年間に延長すると発表した。この保証は、1日あたりのドライブ書き込み容量が20Gバイト以下という一般ユーザーレベルの使用に対して適用される。データセンターのような一般的に入出力の多い環境など、企業レベルの使用に対しては条件が課される。 Gartnerの研究ディレクターを務めるJoseph Unsworth氏は、「同社の最新製品である320に対する、(保証期間の)3年から5年への延長は重要である」と述べた。「これは、Intelのフラッシュ管理能力が非常に高く、長期間にわたる保証を進んで提供する意志があることを証明するものである」(Unsworth氏)
Appleが「Mac」のCPUをIntel製からARM製に切り替えるとのうわさが流れるなか、IntelはAppleとの協力関係を強調している。Intelのセールスおよびマーケティング担当シニアバイスプレジデントTom Kilroy氏は、米国時間5月18日に公開されたReutersのインタビューで、Appleとは非常に緊密に連携しており、「われわれのロードマップの形成をAppleが助けているといってもよい」と述べた。 Appleは現在、すべてのMac製品でIntelのプロセッサを使用しているが、Appleが「MacBook」シリーズを、現在「iPhone」や「iPad」で使用しているARMアーキテクチャに切り替えることを検討しているとのうわさがある。技術ニュースサイトSemiAccurateは5月、AppleがMacBookと「MacBook Pro」でARM製CPUを採用するのは「決定事項
