先日の「米原万里「漢字かな混じり文は日本の宝」」に対する反応のなかに、マンガとのつながりを示唆するものがあった。 漢字が一種の「アイコン」であり、日本語が視覚的な言語なのであれば、日本でこれほどマンガが発達したことは、たしかに偶然ではなさそうな気もする。 手塚治虫は「漫画は一種の象形文字である」と述べたそうだ（「ポジティブで寛容なスタンスが文化を発展させる」で紹介した、『サルまん』のコラムにそう書かれている）。たしかに、手塚治虫の絵は「アイコン」っぽいので、「象形文字」に近い感じがする。『ドラえもん』とか『サザエさん』なんかも、アイコンに近いタイプだろう。 マンガの「ふきだし」では、狭いスペースにセリフを収めなければならない。「ふきだし」という１点だけ考えても、１文字あたりの情報密度が高く、視覚的な言語である日本語は有利である。 日本語という言語を使う日本人は、もともと視覚でのコミュニケー
