2011年11月15日から20日までブータンのジグメ・ケサル・ナムゲル・ワンチュク国王とジェツン・ペマ王妃が国賓として来日していた。 来日中は、国会での心打たれる演説、東日本大震災の福島県を訪問、またブータンとも縁ある京都を訪問(1957年、第3代ブータン国王王妃ケサン・チョデン・ワンチュク殿下が来日した際に京都を訪問)し、多くの日本人も注目を集めたことだろう。 ブータンは1972年にジグミ・シンゲ・ワンチュク国王が提唱し、建国の理念に掲げている「国民総幸福量(Gross National Happiness:GNH)」でも有名である。「国民総幸福量(GNH)は国民総生産(GDP)よりも重要である」という理念で、2005年の国勢調査によるとブータン国民の約97%が「幸せ」と回答している。近年、GNHの概念は世界的にも注目されている。 東日本大震災の翌日2011年3月12日にはブータンでは国
