[購読時間:1分] GPSで今いる場所を起点に行きたい場所へとナビゲートしてくれるiPhoneアプリ「Where To?」(350円)。斬新なUIが印象的だが、これを開発した米FutureTapが8月6日、「アップルの特許出願にうちのアプリのUI画像が使用されている、そんな話聞いてない」と主張し、騒然となっている。FutureTap社は寝耳に水のようでかなり困惑した様子。 「Where To?」のリリースは2008年12月で、バージョン3.0が2010年7月30日にリリースされたばかり。 問題となっているのは、特許出願に参考図版として申請されている右この画像。 もはや似ているとかいうレベルではなく、アイコンデザインまでそのまんまであるため、このアプリのものであるのは疑いようもない。 これはアップルが「iTravel」という名前で開発中と噂される旅行関連アプリの特許申請に含まれるもので、旅行
FreeType and Patents
The TrueType bytecode patents have expired! Since May 2010, all patents related to bytecode hinting have expired worldwide. It it thus no longer necessary to disable the bytecode interpreter, and starting with FreeType version 2.4, it is enabled by default. All video codecs are covered by patents. A patent pool is being assembled to go after Theora and other "open source" codecs now. Unfortunately, just because something is open source, it doesn't mean or guarantee that it doesn't infringe on others patents. An open standard is different from being royalty free or open source.
