Last summer Google Earth Blog collected a few of the better tools for tracking storms in Google Earth. Now GEB will maintain a network link with some of the best weather tracking tools available. 今年も本格的に台風の季節になった。こないだの7号は東海・関東を縦断して行ったし、今度の9号は沖縄を直撃する構えだ。 アメリカでは、ハリケーンの "Dennis" がフロリダを直撃したが、そのときに Google Earth の上にレーダー画像などをオーバーレイして何分かおきに自動アップデートする仕組みが Google Earth Hacks や（Keyhole BBS 改め）Google Earth Community に多数アップされていた。 というわけで、自分も同じような仕組みが Image Overlay を使ってできるかどうか、いつも利用しているウェザーニュースのレーダー画像を使って試しに作ってみることにした。で、10分ほどであっけなくできたのがこれ。 作り方はとても簡単。 ● Places の中で右クリックメニューで New → Image Overlay を選んで、Image

Googleのプロジェクトの中でGoogle EarthほどLinuxユーザーの羨望をかき立てたものはなかった。いくつかの点から検索エンジンbehemothは完全にOS不可知なはずだが、3D仮想地球儀は相変わらずWindowsデスクトップでしか使えない。しかし、代替品がある。NASAのWorld Windプロジェクトだ。 Google Earthと似た3D惑星視覚化システムで、人工衛星の撮影した画像、天気予報、行政、地形などのマップデータを重ねて表示する。例えば、ズームインして子供時代に住んでいた家を探したり、お気に入りのランドマーク上空を飛行する、海岸線を調査して大陸移動説を検証するなど、一通りのことができる。唯一の違いと言えば、World Windはオープンソースであることだ。 覚えているかもしれないが、Google Earthは、元々はKeyhole, Inc.のEarthview
