A New York exhibition of paintings by Simon Hantaï is an event: barely a roomful of his works have been seen in the United States since 1981. Yet the current Hantaï show at Paul Kasmin Gallery may go largely unacknowledged by today痴 gallery denizen, who is likely to find little to be excited about in a group of pictures that demonstrate a technique in which the canvas is first folded, then painted

Alberto Giacometti’s six-foot-tall bronze Walking Man I sold at Sotheby’s London in February 2010 for the equivalent of $104.3 million, and was briefly (until overtaken this month by a Picasso) the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. It remains, by far, the most expensive work available in multiple examples. The sculpture, cast by the artist himself in 1961, was reportedly bought by Lily
In the eyes of many today, stodgy mediums like painting and sculpture can’t compete with performance when it comes to subverting esthetic and social norms. Insofar as it insists upon fluidity between art and life, "the performative," so the boosters bleat, retains a radical edge all other forms of artistic practice have lost. It’s the final refuge of avant-gardism. This kind of talk always sounds

Outside museums, in noisy public squares, people look at people. Inside museums, we leave that realm and enter what might be called the group-mind, getting quiet to look at art. Marina Abramovic's just-closed exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art was the first exhibition of performance art to have an impact on the cultural world at large, moving out from New York and beyond. It is as distinctive and as potentially influential as the debut of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring or the opening night of Waiting for Godot. The caveats, envies, cries of inauthenticity and charges of
When I think of the Brooklyn Museum the way it used to be, I think of a place that nobody visited, with a strange wing of Egyptian art and huge airy vaults and skylights that were a spiritual oasis for a lone visitor on a weekday afternoon. And I think of Sigmar Polke's solo show at the museum in 1991. Polke died yesterday and, as the old vaudeville line went, how could they tell? How could they t

For fans of hard-core painting, the summer belonged to Rackstraw Downes, whose series of three exhibitions -- at the Parrish Art Museum, at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and at Betty Cuningham Gallery -- proved that he’s maintained his obdurate position as a reporter of the specific. It can be tough, indeed. Where’s the fun in overpasses, deserts, landfills, oil tanks, off-ramps, ventilation
Who’s the bigger freak, Michael Jackson or David LaChapelle? The late Jackson was clearly the king, but all he had to work with was his own wacky self. LaChapelle, by contrast, commands an Olympian cast of characters, often in outlandishly erotic costume (or no costume at all), disporting on blazing sets that marry Bollywood and the Bible with a bit of the Parthenon thrown in for good measure. Sept. 23, 2010 GANG ATTACKS ARTISTS IN ISTANBUL Art has put Turkey in the international spotlight -- but not in the way that its artists might have hoped. The mob beat visitors with clubs, assailed them with pepper spray and broke windows. Four g

Crumbling and poorly lit, Moscow’s late-Brezhnev Era Central House of the Artist is no place for a contemporary art fair, whatever nostalgic appeal the structure might have to the local art crowd, who have defended it constantly against developers, including Sir Norman Foster. Christian Marclay is a darling of museum curators. Wherever there is a show about sound or music he is sure to be in it. However, the question remains: Is Christian Marclay a good musician? And does it matter? For two months this summer, the Whitney Museum got all trigger-happy and gave its keys to our multidisciplinary artist so he could throw a party. Oh, what a setting! Marclay invaded the enti

Few memories evoke as much giddy joy for me as Halloween. For myself and the collection of miscreants, juvenile delinquents, and future felons that comprised my peer group, Halloween meant that we owed our community some smashed pumpkins, obscene renderings, trees full of toilet paper and of course the odd flaming bag of dog shit on the front stoop. Halloween untethered us. It was the day we more
Art had its place at last month’s 35th Toronto International Film Festival, Sept. 9-19, 2010, starting with the new $129-million, block-long TIFF Bell Lightbox, an ensemble of cinemas and galleries that opened Sept. 12, 2010. Making a photograph -- a snapshot of a passing scene or the staging of a scene as though for posterity -- has usually been understood as an act of consciousness, what Henri Cartier-Bresson called a ”decisive moment” of consciousness, but I suggest that it has less to do with consciousness than the unconscious. It has to do with that ”critical part of rapid cognition known as thin-slicing” -- ”the

Oct. 19, 2010 SWEDISH BRILLOS ARE BUNK: WARHOL AUTHENTICATION BOARD It’s one of the most famous arguments in all of art theory: Arthur Danto’s claim that Andy Warhol’s Brillo Box sculptures represent the "end of art," because they don’t have any distinguishing features -- it’s just art because the artist says it is. Well, the Andy Warhol Authentication Board begs to differ. In a 27-page encyclical
Look out the window of Haunch of Venison in New York -- the gallery is still on the 20th floor of Rockefeller Center, though it says it’s looking for more prosaic quarters in Chelsea -- and see the famous Avenue of the Americas, lined with office buildings like geometric beehives. Hard and shiny, this is the machine for modern life. Turn back inside and find sculptures by the Australian artist Pat
James Salomon is only 35, bit it feels as if he has been around the New York art scene forever. For years, Salomon was the best looking and smoothest of the Armani-clad male mafia working for Mary Boone and James, with his special combination of cunning and humility, was the most adept assistant at smoothing over Madame's often ruffled feathers. But Salomon also has his eye on the main chance. Gro
Making a tour of Chelsea’s contemporary galleries, I noticed the maples beginning to flame and the sweet gums turning maroon. Dear Jerry, I’m not signing my name to this question because I’m a New York dealer whose gallery you visit. You once talked to me about "some bad art-dealer behavior patterns." As a kid, I’d watch moths dance around the streetlights and wonder if they were angels. My Irish grandmother told me that angels fairly surrounded us, keeping evil away. I confess, unlike Peter Schjeldahl who adores them, to hating every abstract work Gerhard Richter has ever attempted, including the deeply dull color charts. Of course, I worship all his other stuff, finding it superior to even Warhol, who in his subjective cynicism and pictorial ambiguity, is Richter's esthetic secret sharer. So it was with reluctance last Wednesday that I strolled into the Drawi
Those, like myself, who marvel at the record prices for the last available classic (if secondary) works by Andy Warhol, must consider that the time between their creation and now is the equivalent of the time span between the Civil War and World War I, a length in which two full generations have come and gone. The pressure of what we continue to call contemporary art collapses this period in our m
CHARGE ADMISSION TO THE SMITHSONIAN? Cutting the military budget and taxing the rich may be off the table as far as balancing the federal budget, but we can always raise funds by charging money to look at art. Or so thinks the ostensibly bipartisan Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which has proposed cutting funding for the Smithsonian Institu

Sorry, we can’t find what you are looking for. Take a deep breath. Everything’s going to be okay.
Looking back on the year in painting, which artist from the past do you think has the most influence on artists today? Is it Pollock or Warhol or Nauman? Perhaps it's the cragginess of Louise Bourgeois or the risky searingness of Marina Abramovic? Maybe, with all the lame jokes and visual puns that clog the art fairs these days, it could even be master funster Red Grooms? Nope, the big swinging di
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has the same type of staff found at other major museums -- a director, curators, registrars, conservators, security staff and art handlers -- but it also now has a pastry chef. Caitlin Williams Freeman, a former co-owner of the prized San Francisco café Miette, is now working at SF MOMA, "creating desserts that pay homage to works in the museum without copyin
You know, any year that Lisa Phillips demonstrates at the Met, Jeff Koons gets to curate, Deitch allegedly gets a facelift, Gagosian opens a gallery in Switzerland and the dead lead keeps dominating in general has gotta suck, so time to count our blessings. 1) Pull My Daisy is now available on YouTube, featuring Larry Rivers as the brakeman, Alice Neel at the organ and Jack Kerouac narrating. 2) J
The news that Lindsay Pollock has taken over the reins at Art in America is a mixed bag. Who can envy anyone compelled to sing market songs into the ear of Peter Brant, sultan of Brant Publications, who has gone through a serious case of andropause recently, marked by his undivorce from Stephanie Seymour, Glenn O'Brien’s swift departure from Interview and the sacking of veteran editor Marcia Vetro
The latest installment of the now-six-years-old Vienna Art Week, directed by Robert Punkenhofer, arrived with something of a dull thud during the week of Nov. 15-21, 2010. Too bad. One of a long line of ambitious, incredibly funded, far-reaching Viennese art-world extravaganzas, it pummeled the city with openings, performances, illustrious visitors, local color and panel discussions and, oh, a str
With the New Year come new art shows, which like resolutions demand attention at least for the first few weeks of the year (it’s all downhill after that). On Wednesday, Jan. 5, Aura Rosenberg showed a couple of films to an audience packed like sardines in a small studio space on the Lower East Side, redubbed Sometimes (works of art), courtesy of artist James Siena. Rosenberg’s first film showed ch

Pioneering architectural photographer Ezra Stoller (1915-2004) garnered an A-list clientele that included Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Paul Rudolph and Richard Meier. It is through Stoller’s photography that entire generations came to know icons of 20th century design, ranging from Saarinen’s TWA Terminal to Wright’s FallingWater. Even so, Stoller has been relatively overlooked in

Looking out my window this morning at the third snowstorm of more than 12 inches in three weeks here above the Croton Reservoir, I count myself down from the mild terror that I feel to consider the good parts: no high winds last night, the fence I repaired last week appears to be holding, the deep freeze won’t arrive until tomorrow night. Friends tell me on the phone "how beautiful" the snow must
The traditional fair world’s answer to Art Basel? Hands down, it’s the 57th annual Winter Antiques Show now on view at the Park Avenue Armory, Jan. 21-30, 2011. Last night’s vernissage drew the kind of record crowds and feverish buying that rivets contemporary art collectors to the Swiss fair. The show boasts mega-star offerings, with price points climbing to $6.5 million for a John Singer Sargent
The revealing new survey of photographs and videos by the Beijing-based photographer Wang Qingsong, which has just opened at the International Center of Photography in Midtown Manhattan, contains a 15 photos, many of them mural-sized, and three recent videos. One photograph, titled Blood of the World, perhaps the artist's most ambitious work, is missing from the show, but not because the curator,
A street urchin, wearing an oversized brown hat and grasping a hunk of bread, looks out at the viewer like he’s about to cry. The boy wears a tattered blue jacket that seems to be made of denim. In another picture, a beggar woman stands with a crutch and a bowl, flanked by two children. She wears a long, torn denim skirt that might not be out of place on a hippie from the 1960s. I had glimpsed Dennis Oppenheim around the art world for decades. The artist, who died of liver cancer at age 72 on Jan. 22, 2011, was a beautiful bottle-blond -- cute and disheveled, like a rock star, even into his last decade. He’d be at openings, across rooms, hunkered down at bars with artists, always with women. I only met him once. I was in my early 30s and interviewed him in his Tribeca stu
I guess that it is no surprise, with figures like Seth Rogen, Justin Bieber and Rand Paul dominating the American landscape, that white male infantilism now dominates the art world. Three deeply regressed whiteys, Joe Bradley, Dan Colen and Rob Pruitt, collected, fawned over by much of the art press and, worst of all, continually exhibited by lazy blue chip dealers, have created a salon of nauseat
A spectacularly simple idea makes for a spectacular 24-hour film, a work as strong and strange as Warhol’s Empire, and something one of our local museums ought to buy and place on permanent mesmerizing view as soon as possible. George Condo is a gifted painter who you could say specializes in making truly awful works that people just love. Many of these pictures are currently gathered together at the New Museum. The two-floor installation boasts an entire wall of portraits of bug-eyed, buck-toothed cartoon characters, which everyone is saying are like Old Masters. People find this amusing, and that seems to be enough. Co

CULTURE WARS 2011: DAVID WOJNAROWICZ UPDATE More than two months have passed since Smithsonian Institution chief G. Wayne Clough, prompted by the Catholic League and Rep. As the College Art Association gathers in New York this week (for what one West Coast artist described to me as "98,000 applicants competing for four jobs"), let me share with you a tale told to me on Saturday by a well known mid-career feminist installation artist visiting me for the day. Five years ago, this provocateuse moved to the heart of America to take a four-year contract job as a visitin
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the greatest American political novel ever written, The Gay Place, by William Brammer. The book is divided into three novellas, The Flea Circus, Room Enough to Caper, and Country Pleasures. They tell the story of Democratic politics in Texas in the 1950s, circling around the majestic figure of Governor Arthur Fenstemaker, based on Lyndon J
I have to admit that I shocked the veteran Art in American David Ebony the other night at the Museum of Modern Art opening for "Picasso: Guitars 1912-1914" by asking him this question. David, not for the first time, looked at me avuncularly, and disagreed. I tried to rescue myself by pointing out that Ebony and I were just about the only two critics to unreservedly praise Gabriel Orozco's retro at
