米Googleは5月29日(現地時間)、年次開発者会議「Google I/O 2015」の「Project Tango」のセッションで、第3四半期(7~9月)中に同プロジェクトの開発者向けスマートフォンを発売すると発表した。 Project Tangoは、昨年のGoogle I/Oで発表された、モバイル端末に人間と同じような空間・運動把握能力を持たせる取り組み。特別なカメラやセンサー、アプリを搭載した端末を使い、端末の周囲をリアルタイムで3Dマッピングできるようにする。 具体的な用途としては、拡張現実(AR)ゲームやインドアマップが考えられる。例えばインドアマップであれば、あらかじめ用意した地図(Googleマップなど)がなくても、Project Tango対応端末があれば、リアルタイムで自分の位置を把握できる。 開発者向けスマートフォンには、米QualcommのSnapdragon 81
