先日データセンター向けのOptane SSD DC P4800Xを発表したIntelだが、本日コンシューマ向けとなるIntel Optane Memoryを発表したので、こちらの概要もご紹介したい。 まずはじめに確認しておきたいことは、今回の製品は「Optane SSD」ではなく「Optane Memory」ということである。ここが重要なポイントで、Intel自身この製品はSSDではない(というか、分類としてはSSDなのだが、SSDとして使うには問題がありすぎる)ことを良く理解しており、Optane "Memory"としてリリースすることにした模様だ。 その背景だが、SSDの普及があまり進んでいないことが挙げられる(Photo01)。ノートPCをはじめとしてコンシューマ向けPCでは、SSDの普及が進んでいるのだが、大量のデータを扱うようなケースでは、絶対的な容量としても容量/価格比としても
