O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference（ETech）の三日目，夕方の基調講演に著書「CODE」や著作権の新しいありようである「Creative Commons」で知られるStanford Law SchoolのLawrence Lessig教授が登壇した。テーマは「Coding Against Corruption（汚職に対抗するコード）」。一時期上院議員に立候補するという噂もあったが，聴衆に訴える内容は政治色の強いものだった。 「政府は簡単なことであっても意外と判断を誤ることが多い」と切り出したLessig氏は，一見当然の判断が下せそうなのに判断を誤った例として，著作権の期間延長，地球温暖化を認めるのに10年以上遅れたことなどを挙げ，こうした背景には「金（money）の存在がある」と指摘した。これは必ずしも悪徳政治家が収賄をするということではなく，
