◇放射線被ばくの試練、プラスに これまで日本は「ゼロリスク社会」だといわれてきた。この言葉は「(生存を脅かす)リスクが存在しない社会」ではなく、「リスクが見えにくい社会」を意味する。そもそも生き物にとって、死は最大のリスクといえる。私たちに「リスクが存在しない」はずがないのだ。 たしかに、急速な近代化や長寿化など、さまざまな要因が重なった結果、私たちはリスクの存在に鈍感になっている。日本人の半数が、がんになるというのに「がん検診」の受診率は2割程度(欧米は8割)にとどまる。根底には、私の恩師の養老孟司先生も指摘する「死ぬつもりがない」といった歪(ゆが)んだ死生観があるのではないかとも思う。 しかし、ときに「垣間見える」リスクに対して、日本人は過敏な反応を示すことがある。たとえば、抗菌グッズやアンチエージングが大人気なことが代表的な例だろう。リスクへの、こうした両極端な反応は、まさにアンバラ
