岸田文雄首相はサウジアラビア訪問中の7月16日、ジッダにおいて湾岸協力会議(GCC)のジャーセム・アル・ブダイウィ事務総長と会談した。外務省の発表によると、関係強化のために「日本・GCC外相会合」の定例化が決定し、あわせて、日・GCC自由貿易協定(JGFTA)の交渉を2024年中に再開することについても合意した。 JGFTAは、日本とGCCの貿易・投資を促進する法的基盤として議論されていたが、2009年以降、交渉が中断していた。近年、日本とGCC諸国との経済関係が活発化していることを踏まえて交渉を再開するとしている。岸田首相による2023年7月16~19日のサウジアラビア、アラブ首長国連邦(UAE)、カタール歴訪においても、各地で首脳会談とあわせて、ビジネスイベントを開催するなど経済交流を行っている(2023年7月20日、7月20日、7月21日記事参照)。 GCC加盟6カ国は、2003年に
