ベトナムのトイレには、「WC NAM」といった表示が目立った。中国でもそういう場所では「男」と1文字での表示があるように、中国とは言語面での共通性を感じることが多い。トイレに付きものの男女のマークは、日本の図柄とよく似ているが、これは万国共通化が進んでいるのだろうか。かつてはあるいは瘴癘（しょうれい）の地などと呼ばれたものの、トイレの中は概してとても「衛生」的に保たれている。 この「NAM」は、漢字では男（ダン・ナン）であり、韓国や中国の広東などと同じく末尾の「m」音が保持されている。中国の中原での古い発音がそうだったためで、日本でも古くはそのように読んでいた時代があった。漢字では「男子」「男性」などと表示する日本では、1字で表示されていたならば、意味はよく分かるが、「おとこ」と読んでしまい、少々びっくりしてしまうだろう。 飛行場では、トランクを待つ手荷物受け取り所で、表示板に「HÀNH
