この図は、ブラーフミー文字という共通の祖先から枝分かれして今日に至ったインド系文字の「系図」です。 紀元前3世紀に現れたブラーフミー文字は、やがて北方系と南方系の2つに分かれ、それぞれが独自の発展を遂げていきます。 北方ブラーフミー文字の流れからは、北部・中部インドの広い範囲で用いられるデーヴァナーガリー文字をはじめ、東部のベンガル文字やオリヤー文字、西部のグジャラーティー文字、北部のグルムキー文字など、主としてインド・アーリア系言語を書き表す文字が生まれ出てきました。チベット文字も、北方系の流れをくむ文字です。 一方、南方ブラーフミー文字の流れからは、南インドのタミル文字、マラヤーラム文字、テルグ文字、カンナダ文字など主としてドラヴィダ系言語を書き表す文字が生まれました。島国スリランカのシンハラ文字もこの流れです。 さらに南方系の文字は、海を渡って東南アジアの島々や大陸部に伝わりました。

文字を「読む」「学ぶ」のではなく、文字を「見る」「遊ぶ」展覧会 東京外語大学アジアアフリカ言語文化研究所 「アジア文字曼陀羅 インド系文字ノ旅」展 五十嵐太郎 「アジア文字曼陀羅 インド系文字ノ旅」展が、東京外国語大学のアジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所(以下、AA研)において、6月28日から8月2日まで開催された(内容と反響の一部は以下のサイトで確認できる。http://www.aa.tufs.ac.jp/i-moji/)。文字の展覧会である。しかもインド系文字の歴史と現状を紹介するものだ。展示を見ると、クメール文字、チベット文字、ビルマ文字、デーヴァナーガリー文字、オリヤー文字、マンヤン文字など、その多様性に驚かされる。学術的な展示と言えば、堅苦しいイメージがつきまとう。だが、AA研に所属する小田昌教/ヲダマサノリ氏が、展示構成を担当したことで、そうした予想は見事に裏切られることになった。
