I write about coding, computers, cows, and things that peeve me off. Enjoy your stay. Have a lambda smilie. What do you get when you combine old-school Final Fantasy-style RPGs with Clojure? Fun times for all. Well, for me at least. I'm working on a sort of RPG engine in Clojure so I can make my own RPG. And suddenly I return to blogging, rising from the ashes like some kind of zombie phoenix. Turns out writing a book is a good absorber of time, like some sort of heavy-duty temporal paper towel. Now that I've gotten the terrible similes out of my system, let's talk about keyword arguments, one of my favorite features in any language that supports them. Ruby, Clojure, and Common Lisp are all langua
What do you get when you combine old-school Final Fantasy-style RPGs with Clojure? Fun times for all. Well, for me at least. I'm working on a sort of RPG engine in Clojure so I can make my own RPG. Click the thumbnail for a very preliminary video demo (6.5 MB) showing the engine in action. All I do in the video is walk around, and eventually start adding random NPCs to the map to test collision de
I wrote previously about an awsome plugin to give Emacs Vim-style undo trees. Vim's undo trees are the best thing since sliced bread, but the interface for browsing through the tree is not pleasant. The Emacs undo-tree library has a way to visualize the tree and move through it with your keyboard, which solves this problem. But now, thanks to Steve Losh, Vim has an undo-tree visualizer too. Delici
Unlike Common Lisp, Clojure doesn't support user-defined reader macros. You can read some of the rationale for why in this chat log, among other places. I think that's probably a good decision; I don't see a lot of need for mangling the reader. Regular macros get you pretty far already and Clojure has built-in reader support for all the good stuff. But how hard would it be to have custom reader ma
ANTLR is a parser-generator for Java. Can you use it from Clojure? Sure. Would you want to? Maybe. Here's how to do it, start to finish. For the impatient among you, all of the code below is on github. git clone git://github.com/briancarper/clojure-antlr-example.git Setup I'm going to use leiningen for this project. Let's make a new project called antlr-example. $ lein new antlr-example Now edit p
Fogus' recent article "clojure.rb" speculates about why there seem to be so many Ruby users adopting Clojure. As a Ruby user who adopted Clojure, I figured I'd write about my experiences. What do Ruby and Clojure have in common, that would attract a Rubyist to Clojure? A lot. Obviously, this is somewhat subjective and I don't expect anyone else to agree, but this is what did it for me. Semantic co
I haven't posted here much recently because I've been hacking on another recently-sort-of-completed website. One of my favorite hobbies is old 8-bit video games. The first thing I ever programmed was a website about Final Fantasy for the old NES, and I've fiddled with it for the past 10 years or so. A while back I decided to rewrite the whole thing using Clojure + Compojure with data in mysql. Thi
Two years ago I wrote about how Vim's regexes were no fun compared to :perldo and :rubydo. Turns out I was wrong, it was just a matter of not being used to them. Vim's regexes are very good. They have all of the good features of Perl/Ruby regexes, plus some extra features that don't make sense outside of a text editor, but are nonetheless very helpful in Vim. Here are a few of the neat things you
Eric at LispCast wrote an article about why PHP is so ridiculously dominant as a web language, when arguably more powerful languages like Common Lisp linger in obscurity. I think the answer is pretty easy. In real life, practicality usually trumps everything else. Most programmers aren't paid to revolutionize the world of computer science. Most programmers are code monkeys, or to put it more nicel
