Xen paravirt_ops for x86 Linux What is paravirt_ops? paravirt_ops (pv-ops for short) is a piece of Linux kernel infrastructure to allow it to run paravirtualized on a hypervisor. It currently supports VMWare's VMI, Rusty's lguest, and most interestingly, Xen. The infrastructure allows you to compile a single kernel binary which will either boot native on bare hardware (or in hvm mode under Xen), o
blktap Overview The blktap (“block tap”) userspace toolkit provides a user-level disk I/O interface. Its current main application is to replace the common loopback driver for file-based images because of better performance. The blktap mechanism involves a kernel driver running in Dom0 that acts similarly to the existing Xen/Linux blkback driver, and a set of associated user-level libraries. Using
About These drivers allow Windows to make use of the network and block backend drivers in Dom0, instead of the virtual PCI devices provided by QEMU. This gives Windows (in theory) a substantial performance boost, and most of the testing that has been done confirms that. This document refers to the new WDM version of the drivers, not the previous WDF version. Some information may apply though. Sup
This should be useful to someone looking for HardwareVirtualMachine (HVM) compatibility by specific processors. In other words, CPU's utilizing AMD SVM (Secure Virtual Machine), or Intel(R) Virtualization Technology (currently VT-x). AMD(TM) HVM works with all CPUs featuring the AMD-V (SVM) extension. On a running system look for svm in the output of Linux' /proc/cpuinfo. The desktop processors m

This mini-HOWTO describes how to install a NetBSD domU on a Linux host (dom0). Specifically, I used Debian 3.1 on Xen 2.0.7 as the host and put NetBSD 2.1 in a domU (with NetBSD 3.0-current kernel). This has been updated to include details on * Create storage space. I used LVM: lvcreate -L4G -n netbsd3.0 vol1 * Download netbsd-XENU-INSTALL and netbsd-XENU kernels: wget ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/Net
About the Xen Wiki This Wiki is the shared workspace for the Xen Open Source community. The community is developing the industry’s only 100% Open Source hypervisor, and relies on contributions from the world’s leading systems developers. Citrix hosts the site on behalf of the community, and views its role in fostering the Open Source development process as critical to the long term success of Xen
The Xen API Project A project to define an XML-RPC protocol for remote and local management of Xen-based systems This project is collaborating around a central document, titled "Xen Management API", presenting our ideas in terms of a data model, with an implied binding to XML-RPC calls. These XML-RPC calls can then be used (over one of a number of transports) to manage a Xen-based system. The inte
2. Booting Xen 2.1. I get an error from Xen... (console output starting "(XEN)") (XEN) Initial guest OS requires too much space (XEN) (8MB is greater than 0MB limit) Check that you are correctly specifying the dom0_mem command line option for starting Xen. Note that: dom0_mem=512M should work in recent versions while older versions such as 2.0.5 require the memory specification to be in kilobytes,
Virtual Ethernet interfaces Xen creates, by default, seven pair of "connected virtual ethernet interfaces" for use by dom0. Think of them as two ethernet interfaces connected by an internal crossover ethernet cable. veth0 is connected to vif0.0, veth1 is connected to vif0.1, etc, up to veth7 -> vif0.7. You can use them by configuring IP and MAC addresses on the veth# end, then attaching the vif0.#
