I'll start with a few words of caution. First, while most of the following tips should also be applicable for custom CTAN styles, my focus is on the standard styles that ship with biblatex. Second, these guidelines are about easy-to-medium modifications; for the trickier stuff look at some of the other questions at TeX.sx (or ask your own one). Introduction As newer versions of biblatex were relea
TeX Live from the Terminal/Command Prompt (Windows/Mac/Linux) Understanding the TeX Live update scheme If you have a TeXLive distribution (including MacTeX) there are a few things to understand about updating your system. All TeX distributions consist of both binaries (including scripts) and packages (including classes). It is important to understand that for TeX Live these two parts of the distri
I've read that—unless I know a lot about typesetting—I shouldn't change the margins of a LaTeX document. The default margin size of the article class is really big and it feels like a lot of space is waste. Thanks to the geometry package, it is simple to change the margins, but I'm not sure if I should. Can someone tell me why the default margin size is so big? Also, why shouldn't I change the mar
After perusing LaTeX Editors/IDEs, I'm considering switching from TeXmaker (in which I use the preset "dark theme") to its fork, TeXstudio. What I mean by "dark theme" is a dark background with suitable text colours, which, in my experience, is easier on the eyes than a bright background is. Here is an example: TeXstudio doesn't seem to offer any preset dark theme, though, which means I have to cu
Task Show off your best scientific illustration ! The main purpose of this question is to share beautiful scientific pictures, preferably with an educational aspect. Content Your post must contain a nice picture and the associated code. One can post several pictures, but it must be done in different replies. Of course, it must be done with LaTeX & Friends : the post must start with a short sentenc

The book is mostly meets by the Title Page. Default TeX \maketitle are simple and minimalistic. I'm looking for examples of Title Pages: complex - have different formatting; beautiful and awesome; available online; and, finally!, with TeX sources available. I think such examples would be a great inspiration and motivation stuff!
If you were asked to show examples of beautifully typeset documents in TeX & friends, what would you suggest? Preferably documents available online (I'm aware I could go to a bookstore and find many such documents called 'books'). Extra bonus for documents whose LaTeX source is available. This is not an idle question. Seeing great examples of any craft is both educational and inspiring, let alone
In the papers I read the caption in figure floats is placed below the figure and in table floats the caption is placed above the table. I recognize that this is a common style that a lot of people recommend. But what is the reason behind this difference?
How about this: \documentclass[parskip]{scrartcl} \usepackage[margin=15mm]{geometry} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{3d} \begin{document} \pgfmathtruncatemacro{\tubelength}{5} % in "double hexagon lengths" \pgfmathtruncatemacro{\tubecirumferenceatoms}{12} \pgfmathsetmacro{\tuberadius}{3} \newcommand{\carboncolor}{red} \newcommand{\bondcolor}{black} \tikzset{yzplane/.style={canvas is yz plane at
Soon we can celebrate the New Year. How can we use TikZ for drawing fireworks? For example like this, photographed by Kurume-Shimin, found on Wikipedia: Click on Image search for getting further impressions. On the Wikipedia page you can see further effects, just click the image. I would like to post a nice drawing on our blog for celebrating New Year, and as addition to the TikZ example gallery o
I want to type up some spells from the RPG Call of Cthulhu and give them to my players. I could just type them up in Word or LaTeX, but that seems too...neat. I'd like to make these things look like they were scrawled by a gibbering madman, unhinged by the horrors he has witnessed. Bonus points if you can add any traces of H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Less poetically: Typefaces to make it loo
