I recently got my Raspberry PI and using Raspbian but had an abundant amount of time trying to figure out why every r
Update: Several commenters note that installing this beta can break various other elements in the system. It’s probably worth backing up your SD card before trying it out. Update 2: Updated installation instructions! One of the goals we’ve been working towards with our friends at Collabora over the last few months is the provision of an up-to-date, HTML5-capable web browser for the Pi. In particul
True story: when we were in Tokyo for the Big Tokyo Raspberry Jam back in May, surrounded by engineers from NEC dressed as techno-maids and men wearing CD-ROM drives as hats, we suggested an evening of private karaoke. Everybody blenched with horror at the idea and suggested we just went out for beers instead. So we did. And it was great. I know you’ve seen this picture before, but it’s my favouri
I've got some basic prototyping example code for this type of thing that you are welcome to experiment with. The v4l2capturetoH264.c source file and Makefile can be found at: http://www.trans-omni.co.uk/capture There is also a short two minute capture example, in the same location, which shows a capture of the big buck bunny movie using the code. This was captured with a STK1160 USB capture device
One of the best things about working on Raspberry Pi has been the opportunity to meet groups of people who are trying to bring about the same sort of change in the teaching of other subjects that we’re aiming for in computing. One great example is the computer-based math(s) (CBM) movement, which aims to redefine the teaching of mathematics in schools away from mechanical calculation and towards pr
It took us almost exactly a year to sell the first million Raspberry Pis. Going on that basis, we calculated that we might, if we were lucky, reach the second million around January 2014, or slightly afterwards – we were confident we’d get there by the end of February 2014. So it was a bit of a shock at the end of last week when we got the latest sales figures and discovered that the 2,000,000th R
Task: Virtualise Raspbian Wheezy 2013-02-09 on Ubuntu Linux 12.10 Why?/What do I get? It's a pretend Raspberry Pi, running completely in software, on your desktop, that you can use as if it is a real one (minus the ports and GPIO obviously). LXDE (Desktop) runs, and the internet/network is connected. You can SSH into it, make copies of it, trash it, start a new one from a previous saved copy, and

Here is my solution for racking Raspberry Pis, using a block of plyboard and the audio and video jacks as mounts. This allows simple plugging in and out.

It's certainly not fast by any means, MapReduce jobs are more like tiny data crunching, but at least you can amass a surprising amount of HDFS storage. Why do this? To see if it can be done! I had a stack of Pis that I wasn't quit

Today’s been a bit unlike most Tuesdays at the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Today we’re the recipients of a very generous grant from Google Giving, which will provide 15,000 Raspberry Pi Model Bs for schoolkids around the UK. Google’s Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, has just been to visit Cambridge, and he and Eben have been teaching a classroom of local kids to code all morning. Lucky kids. (Usuall
You might remember that we mentioned last year that a team of UK teachers from Computing at School (CAS) was working on a Creative Commons licensed teaching manual for the Raspberry Pi, with recognition and encouragement from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. That manual is now available at the Pi Store (which you’ll find on your Raspberry Pi’s desktop) as a PDF. If you’re not a Pi owner, there’s a lin

Pete Wood at RS sent me this video yesterday. He’s been at Electronica 2012 in Germany with Rob Bishop, where RS have been demoing the Raspberry Pi (the large wall-slapping game you can see being played in the video is driven by a Pi) and, most interestingly for you guys, the camera board. The camera has a 5 megapixel sensor, and can record 1080p H.264 video at 30 frames per second. This board wil
There’s a question that we’ve been asked almost every day by someone or other – does the Raspberry Pi run Minecraft? It does now – and you’ll be able to download and play it yourself very soon. We sent a bunch of boards out to Notch and the guys at Mojang in Stockholm a little while back, and they’ve produced a port of Minecraft: Pocket Edition which they’re calling Minecraft: Pi Edition. It’ll c
Update again: We’ve now added the ability to adjust the split between GPU and CPU memory with 1MB granularity, rendering the instructions in the previous update obsolete. Now you simply copy the updated firmware here, including the file fixup.dat, into your /boot partition. You can adjust the split manually by setting the gpu_mem property as described here. Update: Those of you lucky enough to rec
Since launch, we’ve supported overclocking and overvolting your Raspberry Pi by editing config.txt. Overvolting provided more overclocking headroom, but voided your warranty because we were concerned it would decrease the lifetime of the SoC; we set a sticky bit inside BCM2835 to allow us to spot boards which have been overvolted. We’ve been doing a lot of work to understand the impact of voltage
Raspberry Pi OSYour Raspberry Pi needs an operating system to work. This is it. Raspberry Pi OS (previously called Raspbian) is our official supported operating system. Install Raspberry Pi OS using Raspberry Pi ImagerRaspberry Pi Imager is the quick and easy way to install Raspberry Pi OS and other operating systems to a microSD card, ready to use with your Raspberry Pi.
