日本語: 1945年8月16日刊の毎日新聞の1面に掲載された写真。当時は新聞は2面しかなかった。当時の新聞の復刻版が『太平洋戦争開戦の日・終戦の日』(大空社、1991年刊、ISBN 4-87236-175-X)p.321で確認できる。この手の、皇居に向かって土下座する民衆の写真は、同年8月16日の讀賣報知新聞、8月15日・16日の東京新聞、8月16日の信濃毎日新聞、8月16日の北国毎日新聞、8月16日の京都新聞、8月16日の西日本新聞にも掲載された(いずれも同書で確認できる)。使われている写真の大きさは、毎日新聞のものが一番大きい。毎日新聞のキャプションは、「"忠誠足らざる"を詫び奉る(宮城前)」。敗戦は自分達が至らなかったためであると詫びる民衆の姿を写した写真として日本ではかつて有名だったものである。しかし、今日、毎日新聞のこの写真は捏造写真であることが知られている。野坂昭如の『「終戦日
