The CSS3 Media Queries module was released as an official W3C Recommendation on 19 June 2012, marking the end of a development cycle that began over ten years ago (the first working draft of the specification was published on 4 April 2001). CSS3 Media Queries, which allows the presentation of content to be tailored to a specific range of output devices, for example presenting a website differently
CSS3 Transitions are a presentational effect which allow property changes in CSS values, such as those that may be defined to occur on :hover or :focus, to occur smoothly over a specified duration – rather than happening instantaneously as is the normal behaviour. Transition effects can be applied to a wide variety of CSS properties, including background-color, width, height, opacity, and many mor
The CSS3 Selectors module and CSS3 Namespaces module have both been released as official W3C recommendations, becoming the second and third CSS3 modules, respectively, to reach the end of the development cycle, following on from the release of the CSS3 Color module as a W3C recommendation earlier this year. According to a post on the CSS Working Group’s blog: Today W3C issued two new Recommendatio
Another new property introduced by the CSS3 Backgrounds and Borders module is background-size. The property adds new functionality to CSS allowing designers to specify the size of background images using either lengths, percentages, or by using one of two keywords; contain or cover. Browser support has grown of late, with the current versions of most popular browsers now supporting background-size

The box-shadow property allows designers to easily implement multiple drop shadows (outer or inner) on box elements, specifying values for color, size, blur and offset. Browser support is growing of late with Mozilla (Firefox), Webkit (Safari/Chrome/Konqueror), Opera and the IE9 Platform Preview all offering a decent implementation of the spec, although Mozilla and Webkit still require their respe
One aspect of CSS3 that hasn’t received a lot of attention so far is the Flexible Box Layout module. Already implemented in the Gecko and WebKit engines, in this alternative box model: “… the children of a box are laid out either horizontally or vertically, and unused space can be assigned to a particular child or distributed among the children by assignment of ‘flex’ to the children that should e
Over the past few weeks I’ve received a number of emails from visitors to CSS3.info regarding CSS3 validation errors when using vendor specific extentions, for example -moz, -webkit, to implement CSS3 in their websites. This certainly isn’t a new topic, and in fact Joost de Valke first raised the issue on this website back in January 2007, however a glance over the W3C mailing-list archive highlig
The powers that be have decided to split CSS3 into multiple ‘modules’, as the monolithic CSS2 would have become far too unwieldy when expanded to the degree that CSS3 has been. Splitting CSS into modules also allows the W3C to bring those modules up to Recommendation level at different rates. Following is a table of all the CSS3 modules and their current status. css3.info will be maintaining this
Not exactly a feature which is new to CSS3, @font-face was first proposed for CSS2 and has been implemented in Internet Explorer since version 5! However, their implementation relied on the proprietary Embedded Open Type (.eot) format, and no other browsers decided to use this format. With the release of Safari 3.1, however, website makers can use any licensed TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) fo
A first Alpha of Mozilla’s new browser is due for release shortly (probably tomorrow). Firefox 3 saw a lot of work go into speed, stability and the interface, but was slightly disappointing for front-end developers and saw CSS implementation overtaken by Safari and Opera. 3.1 will make up for that with a whole raft of features on their way. Implemented in the current nightlies (and therefore, most
The CSS3 border-radius property allows web developers to easily utilise rounder corners in their design elements, without the need for corner images or the use of multiple div tags, and is perhaps one of the most talked about aspects of CSS3. Since first being announced in 2005 the boder-radius property has come to enjoy widespread browser support (although with some discrepancies) and, with relat
Opera have released version 9.5 of their browser today, and the good news for our readers (and web users in general) is that there are lots of CSS 3 features implemented. This article on dev.opera.com goes into more detail, but major improvements include: @media queries text-shadow -o-background-size opacity hsl colours overflow-x & overflow-y all css selectors form pseudo-classes Download a copy
One of the selectors new to CSS3 is the :target pseudo-class, which can be used to apply rules to an element with a fragment identifier; that is, an anchor name or an id. For example, let’s assume you have a section heading with an id of ‘chapter_2’: <h3 id="chapter_2">The Title of the Chapter</h3> You could create a direct link to that element by using the fragment identifier at the end of the UR
Is your browser compatible? After starting the testsuite it will automatically run a large number of small tests which will determine if your browser is compatible with a large number of CSS selectors. If it is not compatible with a particular selector it is marked as such. You can click on each selector to see the results, including a small example and explaination for each of tests. Because it i
Many exciting new functions and features are being thought up for CSS3. We will try and showcase some of them on this page, when they get implemented in either Firefox, Konqueror, Opera or Safari/Webkit. Here they are:
The CSS Working Group has reached an impasse on the issue of percentage margins (and padding) in flex and grid layout, and needs your input to help decide it. Option 1: Flex and grid items resolve percentages in margin-top and margin-bottom against the height of the element’s containing block. Option 2: Flex and grid items resolve percentages in margin-top and margin-bottom against the width of th
