I spent this weekend at Music Hack Day San Franciso. Music Hack Day is an event where people who are passionate about music and technology get together to build cool, music-related stuff. This San Francisco event was the 30th Music Hack Day with around 200 hackers in attendance. Many cool hacks were built. Check out this Projects page on Hacker League for the full list. My weekend hack is called T
The recently released Million Song Dataset (MSD), a collaborative project between The Echo Nest and Columbia’s LabROSA is a fantastic resource for music researchers. It contains detailed acoustic and contextual data for a million songs. However, getting started with the dataset can be a bit daunting. First of all, the dataset is huge (around 300 gb) which is more than most people want to download
I fondly recall the Google Reader days when lots of folks were reading long form content. With the demise of Google Reader, and the rise of Twitter, TikTok and Instagram, long form content drifted into the background. But it may be coming back, thanks at least in part, to Substack. I’m going to give Substack a try, so you’ll find new content posted at musicmachinery.substack.com. I’ve been reading
[tweetmeme source= ‘plamere’ only_single=false] I’m conducting a somewhat informal survey on playlisting to compare how well playlists created by an expert radio DJ compare to those generated by a playlisting algorithm and a random number generator. So far, nearly 200 people have taken the survey (Thanks!). Already I’m seeing some very interesting results. Here’s a few tidbits (look for a mor
[tweetmeme source= ‘plamere’ only_single=false] One of my favorite hacks at last weekend’s Music Hack Day is Tristan’s Swinger. The Swinger is a bit of python code that takes any song and makes it swing. It does this be taking each beat and time-stretching the first half of each beat while time-shrinking the second half. It has quite a magical effect. Some examples: Every Breath You Take Money
This weekend at the Amsterdam Music Hack day we are releasing lots of new stuff. First of all, we opening up beta access to the next version of our APIs. This version is an all new architecture – that I’m rather excited about. Some new features: Performance – api method calls run faster – on average API methods are running 3X faster than the older version. JSON Output – all of our methods now sup
On Monday, Justin and I will present our magnum opus – a three-hour long tutorial entitled: Using Visualizations for Music Discovery. In this talk we look the various techniques that can be used for visualization of music. We include a survey of the many existing visualizations of music, as well as talk about techniques and algorithms for creating visualizations. My hope is that this talk wil
At the recent Berlin Music Hackday, developer Hannes Tydén developed a mashup between SoundCloud and The Echo Nest, dubbed SoundCloudEchoNest. The program uses the SoundCloud and Echo Nest APIs to automatically annotate your SoundCloud tracks with information such as when the track fades in and fades out, the key, the mode, the overall loudness, time signature and the tempo. Also each Echo Nest
Sometime in the last 10 or 20 years, rock drumming has changed. Many drummers will now don headphones in the studio (and sometimes even for live performances) and synchronize their playing to an electronic metronome – the click track. This allows for easier digital editing of the recording. Since all of the measures are of equal duration, it is easy to move measures or phrases around without
