There are a few different ways to sync visuals to music: Manual – live controlling visuals with keyboard or midi controls. Sequencing – pre-analyzing the music and scripting an animation as a list of timecoded events. Midi Input – if you have access to the music’s midi data, this can be a great way to drive visuals. Audio Reactive – code driven visuals that automatically adapt to a live audio inp
BadTV Shader for Three.js by @felixturner. Click to randomize.
I recently started playing with shaders in three.js and I wanted to share some of what I’ve discovered so far. Shaders are the ‘secret sauce’ of modern graphics programming and understanding them gives you a lot of extra graphical fire-power. For me the big obstacle to learning shaders was the lack of documentation or simple examples, so hopefully this post will be useful to others starting out. T
Use the mouse to tilt and scroll wheel to zoom. Change parameters with the control panel. This demo projects webcam video onto a 3D Mesh. It creates a 3D depth map by mapping pixel brightness to Z-depth. Perlin noise is used for the ripple effect and CSS3 filters are used for color effects. More Info. Built by Felix Turner. WebCamMesh is a HTML5 demo that projects webcam video onto a WebGL 3D Mesh. It creates a ‘fake’ 3D depth map by mapping pixel brightness to mesh vertex Z positions. Perlin noise is used to create the ripple effect by modifying the Z positions based on a 2D noise field. CSS3 filters are used to add contrast and saturation effects. Running the Demo Use mouse move to tilt and scroll wheel to zoom. Th
So you want to build some crazy next-gen 3D graphics in the browser? Right now there are 2 good options available: Flash 11’s Stage3D versus JavaScript’s native WebGL. Demos and Source Code To compare the performance of both options I built a couple of simple demos that show 100 semi-transparent cubes with Additive Blending and 2 point lights. The purpose of these demos is to compare 2 equivalent 3
Rutt-Etra-Izer is a WebGL emulation of the classic Rutt-Etra video synthesizer. This demo replicates the Z-displacement, scanned-line look of the original, but does not attempt to replicate it’s full feature set. The demo allows you to drag and drop your own images, manipulate them and save the output. Images are generated by scanning the pixels of the input image from top to bottom, with scan-lin
Notes Glitching may take a few seconds. Recommended for images below 1024 x 1024 px. Runs on any brower that supports HTML5 Canvas: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE 9+. Built using BitmapData.js. Please post issues and feedback here. Check out PhotoMosh for more glitching! Built by @felixturner.
ImageGlitcher allows you to glitch any image and save the result. Glitched images look like they are being displayed on a broken analog TV. Check it out here. This demo was built using Peter Nitsch’s BitmapData.js – a very useful JS port of ActionScript’s BitmapData class which makes it easy to manipulate canvas image data. After playing around with it for a while I got some pleasing glitched imag

I’ve been playing with this 3D bezier code for a while now. I finally got some nice motion happening. Click and drag to rotate the space. The last time I tried this, the ribbon was actually a 2D bezier curve that was then rotated in 3D. This time I got a hang of the math to create real 3D ribbons. Source code is here and includes instructions for how to compile it. The code was compiled using Flex

This swf shows a marquee of letters scrolling across a 3D panel that rotates according to the mouse position. In this post I thought it would be helpful to walk you through how I got to the final swf by combining a few different pieces of code. The swf is a combination of a custom text rendering effect using BitmapData, the DistortImage class, and a simple 3D engine. (All these examples require Fl

Last year I was invited to contribute to the Christmas Experiments website. This site features cutting-edge web experiments by some of the top names in interactive web development. Since WebGL now runs everywhere* I figured I would try to build a game that runs well on mobile devices. In order to effectively use the few days I had available, I decided to to create a simple ‘endless runner’ in the
Flickr Related Tag Browser lets you surf Flickr's 'tag space'. Flickr tags are keywords used to classify images. Each tag has a list of 'related' tags, based on clustered usage analysis. Thanks to the Flickr team for their great API. Flickr is almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world.
