WikiLeaks has been all over the news for the past few weeks. As politicians are quickly finding out, fighting something like WikiLeaks doesn’t stop it — it simply causes it to spread. Thanks to the big crackdown against them, their site has been mirrored all across the globe. Laurence Muller spent some time tracking down the locations of the mirrors (with some useful tools) and built an excellent
A Google Earth application developed by Analytic Graphics Inc. showed real-time (updated every 30 seconds) positions of 13,000 satellites around the Earth. Unfortunately, the company chose to stop supporting their Google Earth application in early 2015. AGI have their own 3D world browsing tool called Cesium and have developed a new application for viewing the real-time satellites which you can tr
Google has updated the 3D buildings in Google Earth for New York City! This is a HUGE update with at least hundreds (if not thousands) of new 3D buildings with photo textures applied. Basically, Google has completed nearly every building in Manhattan Island for Google Earth. Just fly to “New York City” and turn on the 3D Buildings layer in Google Earth. Tilt your view so you can see the buildings
[UPDATE 27 October 2008: If you’re looking for the official Google Earth for the iPhone app story – which was released 26th of October, read this post. The post below was another iPhone app that looked like Google Earth, but was published by Earthscape earlier this summer.] Last week at the 2008 Where 2.0, there were a number of interesting technologies being shown in the exhibit hall. One of the
NASA continues to add some great visualizations for overlaying in Google Earth. This time they have added some data again from MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). As recently reported, you can get near real-time color imagery of the entire Earth viewable in GE4. Now, they have released more full-globe imagery which show different scientific data. All the data is the most recent
Google Earth 4 is officially released! The beta program began 6 months ago, and now almost exactly 1 year after GE 3 was released, GE 4 is no longer in beta (latest version is 4.0.2722). See the Google Earth home page for details, or just go download GE 4 now. GE 4 has many new features not available in the earlier version. Many of the features have been described in this blog over the past few mo
Google has just released the latest beta for Google Earth 4 today (December 16th). Windows and Linux – version 4.0.2693, Mac – version 4.0.2694. Here are the release notes posted by ‘ink_polaroid’ at the GEC. Note: there are some great improvements in here. Also, the new touring feature mentioned is really cool. It will automatically pop up placemark description bubbles as you tour through each pl
Google Earth lets you do whole planet image overlays, so you can turn Earth into other planets if you want (see below for other examples). A few days ago, Google Earth Community member ‘barnabu’ posted a time animation of the planet Jupiter taken by the NASA Cassini spacecraft in the year 2000 over a period of 24 Jovian rotations. The same side of Jupiter is shown in each frame so you see the moti
[NOTE: see my new more detailed look at Virtual Earth’s 3D product.] Today Microsoft has released 3D capability to Virtual Earth (local.live.com). They are saying they don’t require you to run a separate application (although, since you have to download and install a 5 Mbyte browser plug-in, I don’t see that as exactly true). Once you have the required plug-in, turn on ActiveX controls, and meet o
For some time now developers have noticed the Windows version of Google Earth has an, until now, undocumented interface allowing control of Google Earth features. The interface uses a COM Type Library and Google has been quietly working to enhance the features. A few days ago, one of the developers of GE announced the BETA release of this interface at the Google Earth Community and the location of
>>>> [UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2007: The new Google Earth 4.2 has a built-in Flight Simulator mode. Read here for more. ] <<<< The new version of Google Earth 4 Beta now supports controllers. If you already downloaded the new beta a day or two ago (version 4.0.2080 for windows), be aware a new release was made this morning which has a new control feature in the options for controllers. By controllers we’
The new version of GE 4 Beta (4.0.2080) came out last night. One of the key new features added is a feature enabling KML files to have time-based data. This feature had been implemented in the GE Enterprise version for some time, but Google wasn’t satisfied with the interface. The new GE 4 Beta has the new feature with a nifty time interface gadget which appears in the upper right (to the left of
[UPDATE: 1230 ET – Read comment below: someone’s “…parents’ house is in 3D” in the new Japanese dataset.] OMG – I had already discovered Tokyo had 3D buildings, then I started looking for other places. Well, all kinds of cities in Japan now have 3D Buildings! Here is a screenshot of Osaka, Japan for example. Amazing! Turn on the “3D Buildings” layer in Google Earth and go to “Tokyo, Japan” to see
Last summer Google Earth Blog collected a few of the better tools for tracking storms in Google Earth. Now GEB will maintain a network link with some of the best weather tracking tools available. If you save the weather and tracking tools network link in your My Places you will automatically get the latest collection when you turn it on. The current collection contains a global hurricane tracking
Yesterday, someone was looking around at Lava Fields in northern California, and came up with his first discovery of a plane in flight. Only, this one was a really BIG find: a KC-135 refueling a C-5 Galaxy in mid-air! It was posted by someone called “Helomech” at the Google Earth Community (GEC). This is a fantastic find and is on a par with the Lancaster bomber found flying in the UK. The refueli
I’ve been considering writing some new posts (just a few now and then) about what’s been going on with further development of Google Earth applications (for mobile, the web, desktop, and VR), and for the rich Google-developed dataset that continues to grow at an amazing pace. Would there be any reader interest in that? If so, please leave comments below in this post if you would like new posts. Ye
